I went to the e.r. yesterday for a tooth infection because I could not get into dental urgent care.?

This nurse lady came in and stuck a needle in my gums to numb it. It numbed my face up but did nothing for the pain of the tooth infection. A couple of hours later the numbness went away and I was in for the night of my life due to the tooth infection and this morning my face started to numb up again! weird. Now, tonight, my face is in so much pain and my cheek and gums are so swollen. My question is... how long does it Penicillin to really start fighting infection and will this useless inflaming numbness ever go away?! I really think what that nurse did to me is causing way more pain.

I am so sorry that you couldn't get into to see a dentist because the people at the ER really have no clue about Dentistry. She probably tried to numb your tooth but, there are special techniques for getting teeth numb that nurses don't know. It really sucks that they didn't give you any pain meds either! Those would have helped out after the "numbness" wore off. Not sure about the numbness coming and going... I would defiantly mention it to your Dentist when you get into to see him/her. The penicillin may not start to help with the pain for four days... sucks I know... My recomendation... call you Dentist first thing tomorrow morning, when they open. Tell them about your trip to the ER, and that you are penicillin. Tell them you are in a lot of pain. They should be able to see you that day, and if not, call around to other offices until you find one that will see you. YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET STUCK OVER THE WEEKEND WITH OUT SEEING YOUR DENTIST! Trust me!! You will hate yourself of sunday night if you dont :) One important thing! If you do not some work done on this tooth (extraction, root canal, whatever) you will not get better. Yeah the antiobiotics will kick in, in a few days, but in about a month the infection will come back and with a vengance! And you will so wish that you had, had it taken care of now. So please, go see your Dentist :) I really hope that this has helped, and that you get well soon! :)
