Couples was persuaded to only have one child, if they did, they would be rewarded with, free dental care for their child, their child would get into a good nursery and school, ... and what else... ? Please help! Also because the Men were mainly more powerful than Woman, if a Woman had a girl and not a boy what are some things they might do to her? eg. sell her? kill her? etc... thanks!

HOW IS ONE CHILD POLICY ENFORCED? Employers and neighborhood committees had to enforce guidelines. 1) Authorization for marriage: 25 years for male and 23 years for female. Students and apprentices not allowed to marry. 2) Monitoring menstrual cycles. 3) Contraceptive use mandatory: UID used for women with already one child. Incentives for sterilization after the birth of the first child. Couples with two or more children had to have one partner sterilized (women 80% of the time). 4) All pregnancies must be authorized: Authorized pregnancies had to be aborted. 7th, 8th or 9th month abortions are legal WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMEONE DISOBEYS? * Disincentives used to discourage larger families: * Fine up to 15% of annual income. * Couples forced to give up all privileges if a second child was born and had to repay any cash awards it had received. * A third child denied free education, subsidized food, and housing privileges. * A third child's parents would be penalized with a 10% reduction in wages. WHAT HAPPENS IF PARENTS OBEY? * Incentives offered to couples with only one child: * Monthly allowances paid to couples with only one child. * Child entitled to free educational and medical services. Some regions of China perform up to 20,000 abortions a year, even into the 7th, 8th, and 9th months of pregnancy Mass sterilizations are preformed particularly in rural areas Female Infanticide is much more common given the massive preference for male children Less children leads to an increased role for women in the economy and changes the cultural status for women in china. CRITICAL RESPONSES: Policy leads to: * sex selective abortion * High divorce rate involving women whose one child turns out to be a girl (however the law has changed to prevent this resulting in men beating their wives until they divorce them on grounds of assault) * Difficult choices for the rural community that needs old age security, labour, and males males stay in the community and provide both security and labour for a lifetime. .
