I'm an Iraq war veteran and the VA is refusing to continue a routine (but expensive) dental treatment which began while in the military. I cannot afford a dental plan and I do not qualify for Medi-Cal (California's single-payer health care for the poor). I'm willing to go to Canada to get this done. Anyone have any resources on how I can get this done through Canada's Medicare?

How can you get dental treatment in Canada as a US citizen? Easy...just pay for it. Canada's dental coverage is extremely limited. I think only a few provinces (Quebec being one of them) offers a basic dental package to children under a certain age...used to be 16, but now it dropped to 10 or 12. If you tried to immigrated to Canada, applied for permanent residence or citizenship, and then tried to claim your dental treatment, you still would not be covered. That's because we are expected to handle that in a private insurance. My advice to you...stay where you are. As a veteran, you are probably getting at least some funding from the government or health coverage through the VA hospitals that you probably would have to give up if you moved to Canada. Your best bet is to find a university or college that has a dentistry program. Here in Montreal, there is a university that does various treatments for volunteers. The students will do cleanings, fillings, root canals, etc all under the supervision of the teacher, who is a certified dentist. The "patients" only pay for the materials used, and may be asked to fill out a questionnaire rating the student's skills or "bedside manner". In California, you have: - USC School of Dentistry - UCSF School of Dentistry - UCLA School of Dentistry - Dugoni School of Dentistry - Loma Linda School of Dentistry It costs you a phone call to see if the schools in your area that have a dentistry program would offer treatment for free or at lower costs.
