Do students get free dental care (UK)?

Thursday, November 11, 2010

I'm a full- time student at Uni. I'm in England and I'm 23. Is dental care free for me? If not, how much would it cost roughly? I just want a check up and maybe a clean. There's nothing wrong with them as far as I'm aware, just haven't been in years. I don't work and my family are from a poorer background. Thanks :)

YES IT IS FREE! There are some requirements other people have mentioned though. If you are over 18 and in full time education in order to qualify for free treatment you must fill in a HC1 form and send it off. You can pick one up from your GP and it will confirm all the above info. You will then receive a HC2 certificate which will entitle you to free care (dental, prescriptions and opticians). This will need to be re-applied for once a year as a HC2 only lasts 12 months. If you need to pay for any treatment prior to receiving it make sure you get a receipt and you can send it off for reimbursement once it is issued (the form mentions it). Alternatively if your uni has a dental school you can get treated for free in there.
