Help! I need help with my dogs dental care.?

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

He had really bad calculus on his teeth last yr, I got his teeth cleaned professionally. However, now it seems like the yellow is coming back and he has like a line of green near his gums too. I brush his teeth about 3 times aweek (he hates it) but I do add a dental additive (contains baking soda) in his water. I also give him dental chews and toys like greenies and the kong with zigis but NADA. Pls Help!

Okay, I'm the evil one... Greenies are BAD for your dog. While they are great at keeping teeth clean, the problem is when they sliver and break off. It can cause punctures in the tummy/intestines, and also possibly cause a blockage depending on how much he accidentally swallows. A great way to keep your dogs teeth clean that is healthy and safe is to give him raw, uncooked frozen marrow bones. You can get these from your local butcher. Put him in a crate, give it to him, and let him enjoy. Generally, if they are thick enough, the dog will never be able to break the bone, but will spend a great time chewing on it which will help with the tarter build up. An added bonus is once he cleans all the marrow out of the bone, you can refill it with peanut butter or cottage cheese, freeze, and repeat! Please don't brush his teeth with human toothpaste as this can be deadly to ogs. Also, fresh clean water should be made available along with the additive water. Another suggestion is pig ears. They make a great, safe treat, and also work well at cleaning against the teeth. Kongs are great, safe, and well used also :) Best of luck with the build up. It sucks :(.
