How often should I brush my teeth? Some say do it after each meal (i eat many small meals every day), some say only twice a day to prevent plaque loss. I know to floss daily. What else?
--------------------
three times a day is fine, but let me explain the science. tooth decay is caused by bacteria. Bacteria consume carbohydrates (ie, sugars) in your mouth. the decay is caused by the acid that the bacteria produce as a metabolic end product. ("metabolic end product" is a fancy science-y way of saying they poop out acid!) what stops this? remove the bacteria. this is what brushing and flossing accomplishes. Also, rinse w/ fluoride (such as ACT) - this makes the tooth enamel stronger; more acid resistant. drink plenty of water and don't drink soda. This makes your mouth less acidy and more base-like. the more acid in your mouth, the faster they can decay. now, the reality is the whole process (bacteria colonize teeth, bacteria eat sugar, bacteria poop acid, acid causes irreversible tooth decay) TECHnically takes about 48 hours. That said, you COULD only brush/floss once every 2 days and might be ok! of course, from a standpoint of your breath, this would be pretty gross. i'd say this: brush 2-3 per day, floss at night (before brushing). after the floss/brush at night, rinse w/ the ACT. obviously visit your dentist twice a year; get xrays taken once a year to make sure new decay isn't sneaking in! i've had all my back teeth filled TWICE by 22 yrs old and i take great care, but i still sometimes need touch-ups! good luck!
