Can I get dental care without insurance?

I have this crappy retainer that's really ineffective, and I wanted to get another one. The only thing is, I don't want my parents to pay for it. I'll be leaving for college in the fall to the other side of the state, and I'm wondering if I can pay for a regular retainer with my own money? Even if its expensive, I want to know please. If possible, please state how much it might be.
