Dental care before toothpaste, what was used?

How did people clean their teeth and what was used to remove plague?

My mother grew up on a Pacific Island as a child & she used salt on a rag. She only started using toothpaste when she came to Australia in the 50's when she was in her 20's. She died aged 71 with all her own teeth.
