How Can I Obtain Dental Care for my Kids?

Saturday, November 13, 2010

I have two kids and have a very small income. Rent and utilities are truly a struggle, and I have no savings. I have health insurance through my job, but no dental. I got a private Dental Plan for the kids, but they both need about $1500 (my portion) worth of work. I do not qualify for the financing through the dental office. I am really upset with myself for not being able to care for their teeth. Mine can fall out, and that's my problem, but I am sick doing this to my kids. They need 4 root canals between them, and have a few cavities each. Also, need braces, but that I could feel OK not being able to afford, I guess. So, in a nutshell, every month that goes by that the kids dont get their dental care, I know they'll need even more in the future. I am literally flat out broke. I have zero money, zero to sell to afford it. I am looking for a second PT job to pay for it, but in the meantime, is there a free clinic or something I can go to? I have found none in the listings. I am in Northern Los Angeles County. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This is of course a hard time for you and I am very sorry to hear this. I hope I can help you. I am in PA and I know that we have dental schools here in the city and they have students who are finishing up and take patients for free. I would suggest you call the local dental schools in your area and ask them if they offer free dental work from students. I know many people that choose this way and were really happy. The students are always supervised by licensed dentists and they really take there time and always do a great job. You can also try to do some research and write emails or letters to your local dental office's and see if there is a dentist willing to help you and volunteer some hours to help your children. I know many dentist do work for free and help their local citizens. You are correct the more you wait the more the infection spreads in their mouths and the more problems they will have. If you can at least do one thing at a time that is also better then nothing. Good luck and I hope someone out there will help you whether it be a local dental office or a dental school.
