Take Action: Continental Breakfasts

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

When you stay at a hotel, are you drawn to the ones with free continental breakfasts? I know they're not really free since breakfast is included with the cost of the room, but there's something about not having to hand over an extra $10 that early in the morning that makes for a great start to the day. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed with the breakfast offered at my recent stay at Jameson Inn. The only healthy options were plain instant oatmeal and apples. Besides that, everything was processed white flour: muffins, Fruit Loops, waffles, and biscuits with gravy.

I think just because it's a vacation is not a good enough reason for a healthy diet to be flushed down the drain. I've tried that excuse and felt miserable and bloated after the vacation.

There are lots of options that could be added to a quick and convenient continental breakfast: oatmeal, granola, yogurt (without artificial colors), seasonal fruit (more than just apples please), scrambled or hard-boiled eggs, and whole grain cereals and muffins. For the whole grains, it'd be great if they were labeled as such so we know what we're getting. Ingredient lists would be even better, especially for those with allergies.
I emailed the hotel chain with these suggestions and was told now is the perfect time to voice our opinions because they are currently having meetings about changes for next year. So I encourage you to email any hotel chains with disappointing continental breakfasts that you have visited this year, and ask them for some healthier options.
