I have had TMJ for a few years. My dentist recently changed to a new digital type of xray that uses a frame to hold the device in your mouth. The last time I was barely able to open my mouth to allow the xray to sit properly. This time the dental hygienist pushed on my jaw and the jaw spasmed to badly that I gagged and was unable to get xrays. Is there a smaller digital xray I could ask for or maybe a smaller adaptor? I also have to have 1 cavity and another cavity (or crown) in the next few weeks. I was told the minimum amount of time would be 90 min for the cavity (difficult to get to). I'm really dreading my next visit. Is there anything I can do to have a less traumatic experience next time? Medication? Bite block? Help!
--------------------
Make sure you tell your dentist about the TMJ problem. They should be aware and try to help minimize problems from an extended appointment. There a number of things that can help during longer appointments: 1. Giving you periodic rests, to close and relax your jaw 2. Using a bite block to help you hold open (we have strong "closing" muscles, but very weak "opening" muscles and these muscles fatigue very quickly. Using a bite block usually helps. 3. Consider using an NSAID medication such as Ibuprofin prior to your appointment. You should take 600mg-800mg (if your stomach can tolerate) about 30 minutes before the appointment for the best result (check with your dentist to be sure) The digital x-ray sensors are larger (thicker) than traditional film, but the dentist may be able to use a smaller holder. Sometimes we try without the holder all together and have our patients hold with their finger or tongue. Explain to the dentist your concern, and hopefully they will try to accomodate your trouble. Good luck!
