I have to go in every 4 months for periodontal maintenance. I've gone religiously for the last two years and have taken pretty good care of my teeth. I don't floss nearly as much as I'm supposed to (but who does?) and this lady acts like it's a personal insult to her when I tell her that I don't. I pay up front for their services and I don't have insurance. Sometimes I want to tell her to just shut up and clean my teeth. Are they all like that? Should I find another dentist or just deal with it?

Hi! Sounds like you got the "Soup Nazi' for a hygienist. Some are like that, but I do not allow my hygienists to take it personally. I've been in dentistry for over 20 years and I find that gently encouragement works better than head banging. If people are not going to floss, so be it, remind them and move on. I tell them that keeping their mouth healthy is their choice. No one can force them to do any more than they wish too. I always remind them that with the new floss threaders, that are pre loaded, it takes only 1 minute to go the whole mouth and you are done. I often buy a small bag for my harder cases and ask them to use them for 1 month and tell me how much they did or did not like them. If they use them for 1 month (honor system) I do not charge them for the bite-wing xrays (40.00). SO far, I don't think anyone has lied to me for the free xrays. A few told me they did NOT use the floss threaders after 1 week. So I tried. Just tell the dentist that you like her cleanings, but not her lectures and for her to turn them down a notch. That is your right as a patient. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie D~
