Will I be able to get dental braces in the Air Force?

Thursday, March 3, 2011

I spoke to my recruiter regarding this subject and he told me that the Air Force will pay for it. But I have read that they will only pay for it if the doctors agree that they are bad. Most people would say that my teeth are not bad. I have a gap and my two front teeth are slightly bucked. My two front teeth have been bothering me for a while; over a year and a half now. My plans were to get them fixed after college. Now that am joining the air Force, I wished I had gotten them while in college. Anyway, I just wanted to know if I'll be able to get them while active duty. I don't really care if i have to pay them myself.

They will only give you braces if they are bad..really, really bad. The gap you are talking about is cosmetic and the Af does nothing for Cosmetic dentistry. If the slightly bucked teeth are not affecting the way you chew (obviously they haven't or you would've gotten them fixed before) , then no, you won't get them. Having braces makes you useless to the AF. You cannot train in braces, you cannot deploy in braces. They rarely do braces for Active Duty.
