i need help about my dogs dental problem!?

Thursday, March 3, 2011

ok, so I posted something not too long ago about how my dogs gums looked beige...actually, I realized later on that those were not his gums...I think its either plaque or tartar, maybe both? Idk. But its REALLY bad. There is so much that it really did look like his gums and there was so much build up on his right side towards the front that he couldnt even close his mouth fully. So anyway, I'm posting this because today I brushed his teeth and the build up actually started PEELING off. He's got a piece hanging out of his mouth right now because I'm afraid to pull on it or do anything to it in case it'll hurt him. Now, don't get this wrong. I just adopted him. He came to me with this problem so I'm not at fault for any of this. It's the last owner who probably never brushed his teeth or anything. She claimed she was moving and had to get rid of him but honestly, she probably knew he had something going on and got rid of him to make a profit off of me. I'm so mad that he's been neglected like this. So I have 2 questions: Has this ever happened to anyone? And how much would it cost about to have him seen and taken care of by the vet? My poor baby :-(
--------------------
I am sorry to tell you this, but he needs to see a vet immediately and it's not going to be cheap, He needs a professional veterinary cleaning, and he will be anesthetized for it. That's going to be at least $200 bucks. Depending on how bad it is, he may need to have some teeth pulled. That's more money. This could go into the thousand dollar range if it's really bad. Either way, he'll be given a prescription antibiotic. Don't brush his teeth until he's seen the vet--you'll just cause him pain and make him dislike brushing. You do need to address this soon, because he can get a systemic infection or an abscess or both. I'm sorry you are paying for years of neglect. But happy he has a much more caring home now! ETA: I don't have this issue with my dog because she has always had her teeth brushed daily. 7 years old and never needed a cleaning. However I sit for a 5 year old dog who had terrible teeth and she had to have 5 teeth pulled. You don't even want to know what it's cost. Her owners just didn't know that they needed to clean her teeth, and somehow their vet never told them.
