What is the average number of dental crowns I should have as a 56 yr old man?

I recently went to my dentist for a cleaning. After the cleaning by the hygenist, the dentist comes in for a routine exame including digital xrays. He then tells me that I need 2 crowns. He says 1 tooth may last longer with a resin filling but the other can't be properly gotten to for a filling. Crowns at this dentist run about $1100 a pop. I ask him if can do the filling before I leave. He says yes if I can wait 20 minutes. I wait. While I wait, I hear him in the other room telling a woman she needs a crown. After awhile he comes in and does the filling. It takes about 20 minutes and costs $169. I tell him I plan to wait until my insurance will take care of the normal 50% of the cost. Problem is, my insurance has run out because they only pay a total max of $1200 a year...and pay 50%. Every time I've gone for a cleaning, this dentist has told me I need a crown(s)..or need to have an existing crown redone. $$$$$. My insurance has run out. Looking in the mirror, i count about 6 crowns in my lower jaw. I can see all those in the top jaw but expect similar. How many crowns should i expect on average. I am a 56 yr old man? I brush 2x a day and floss 2x a day. Sometimes i use a waterpik as well. I can i know if my dentist isn't pumping me for $$$. I live in Southern California.
