What are the spousal military benefits?

Thursday, March 3, 2011

I get married IN 3 WEEKS!!! I am pregnant and have no idea what benefits I should get when I do get married to my military husband... He knows even less then I do about the benefits... (I know ridiculous, but true) Do I have to apply? Which should I apply for? Do I get BAS/BAH? Will I get automatic health care and dental? Does my husband have to be in the military 2 years before I can live on base with him? I have attempted to research, but I hardly know what to even look for... What else do I look for? I'M GOING CRAZY, SOMEONE HELP ME CALM MY NERVES. AND WHOEVER SAID GETTING MARRIED WAS EASY NEEDS TO BE SHOT IN THE FOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
--------------------
When you get married the first thing that needs to be done is have your information entered into the DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System). He will need your marriage certificate in order to do this along with your Social Security #, birthdate, etc... once you are entered into the system you can get a Military ID card. He needs to be with you to get one, or you can have a Specific POA (Power of Attorney) to get one at the closest base to you. Once you are in, you are automatically covered by Tricare Standard. With Standard you must see a doctor who is accepted by Tricare. You will have a yearly deductible & each visit a co-pay. How much it is will depend on what is done. You can if you are by a base, change to Tricare Prime, with Prime you are seen at MTF (Military Hospitals/Clinics) and there is no co-pay at all. Go to http://www.tricare.mil to get more information. For Dental that is United Concordia there is a monthly fee for this. You will need to pay the first month via credit/debit card and then he will need to have it automatically deducted from his pay as an allotment. It is around $12 for single & $28 for families. BAS is not for you it is for the AD member ONLY. This is to provide meals for them. If they are in the Army & living in barracks then it is automatically deducted each time they use the mess. When they hand back in their meal card & move out of barracks they will stop getting the deduction. For the Navy if they are on a ship then it is automatically deducted every month no matter what. The only time it isn't is if the Galley is unoperational. If they are on shore duty then they will see the BAS. BAH is going to depend on several factors. He may already be qualified for it if he is living out in town in an apartment or house. There is 2 rates 1 is for those without dependents (spouses are considered dependents) and 1 rate is with dependents. It doesn't matter if there is 1 dependent or 20, the rate is the same each month. The other factor is what rate/rank he is and what is the location of the base. If he has orders to a place in the lower 48 states (considered CONUS) and he is there for at least 26 weeks or longer then he can change it to accompanied orders. This means that the BAH will be based on the zip code of the command so he can find a place out in town for you to live together in. Or you can live in military housing in which the BAH will be automatically deducted. The BAH is to cover the rent and utilities each month. You will have to pay for phone, cable & internet even in military housing. If you can get into housing right away is going to depend on the base itself. Some it will not be a problem while other places have a wait time so you can rent out in town until one becomes available. Now as for your HHG (Household Goods) the military will not move them to his current location, that is something which needs to be done by you. The only way they will move you is if he is going from school to his first command and you have done all the paperwork before he gets his orders. Now if he has orders OCONUS (Outside Continental US - includes Hawaii & Alaska) you will need to undergo an Overseas Screening that includes medical & dental before Command Sponsorship will be given to you. If he is in a place like Korea and will only be there for a 1 year or less it is difficult to get accompanied orders. This means that you will be living where you are currently until he comes back. In this case & any other case in which the orders are unaccompanied the BAH will be based on your location. You will need to show a lease to prove that you are paying rent or a mortgage each month. He doesn't have to be in teh military for 2 years before you can be together. It is going to depend on where he is now & what his job is. Normally though between schooling & 1 OCONUS PCS to say Korea it can be 2 years before you actually get to be with each other. Every situation is different. COLA the only time this comes into affect is if you are at a OCONUS location. Then it will depend on his rate/rank, years in, # of dependents for the amount each month. once you are a spouse find the closest base to you and take hte Spouse 101 class, it will help you a lot. There is also forums & groups online that can provide you with more information like yahoo groups, cinchouse.com or military.com (click on discussions then onto Military Spouses & Community).
