How to get stepson to bathe, brush teeth and wash hands after toilet business?

Monday, January 3, 2011

My 13 stepson will not wash his hands voluntarily in the restroom after taking care of toilet needs. When he does wash his hands, he doesnt lather up he just rinse the unagitated soap off his hands and proceeds to the kitchen. I have to remind him daily of dental hygiene and showering and ironing his clothes. What the hell do I do? My husband has to remind him too!

You just keep reminding him... EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! Eventually it will sink in. Mine are 6 and 4, and my after restroom ritual is... Did you wash?... "yes daddy". With soap?... "yes daddy". Or sometimes they just turn around and go back. Did you make bubbles?... "yes daddy". Or sometimes... There's actually another question I ask first, but I didn't think it necessary to share that one! Same with the teeth. Just keep reminding. As for the ironing, I don't want mine doing that yet, but when the time comes, my plan is to ask them... Did you iron your clothes? If the answer is yes... "good job"! If the answer is no,.... "Do it now... and while your at it, iron my things, AND your mothers"! Once they realize that they are doing much more work by waiting to be told, I think the problem will be (mostly) solved.
