I've been a new york state resident all my life, until a few years ago I was officially so, as I lived at my fathers address. Now, he moved when my mother died, and I went to school. I go to a SUNY school, but because my dad lives in North Carolina and I am still qualified as a dependent student I don't get TAP. I also have no established residency of my own here, as I don't have the means to get one because Im at school, and when not at school I bounce between familys houses and friends apartments. I really need dental work done, due to some acid wear my teeth are all jacked up and I find it's making my life more difficult; however, I really don't have the means to go to a dentist. I was wondering if anyone on here knew if I qualified for some state or federal aid i wasn't aware of, or knew any dentists who did work for students for cheaper (or potentially free/with repayment of time?)

It's possible that you could get NC Health Choice if you are considered a dependent of you father, but NC is notoriously tight-fisted with regard to income limits. Most states cover children up to age 21 but dental coverage may only be extended to age 18 or 19. If you have a driver's license in NY then that should be all you need to prove residency. However, most of the states I have lived in required that you be employed at least part time to even be considered and then you might be over the income limits. It's a catch-22. Your best bet is probably going to be NC but you would likely have to travel to NC to get dental care since (usually) only NC dentists will take NC medicaid. Anoher option is taking a medical credit line if your credit is good. Most doctors and dentists have some kind of credit service they work with to extend credit to patients who can't pay the entire bill up front; especially when it's an expensive procedure, like braces. But with the "credit crisis", your credit score would hve to be very good to get approved.

Do I qualify for any kind of medicaid or health care that I'm not aware of?
