The booklet from social security says: current items like food & furnishings, shelter, medical & dental care, clothing, recreation, entertainment, education, and savings. It says you can use the money to buy a house or down payment if the house is in the child's name and can pay car payments if the car is in the child's name. I'm confused because what child can own a home or own a car? But they do say you can spend it on current selter. I'm wondering if I can pay my house, car payment, utilities, etc. with this money since he lives with me and I still have to provide for him. Anyone know the laws? If you aren't any surer than me, haven't dealt with it, please don't answer.

Social Security benefits should be used for the child's needs. If the child lives in the household, you can use the check to pay the child's pro rata share of the household expenses and it can include a share of the car payment. (The house and car does not need to be in the child's name). You should not use the money to pay for anything that does not benefit the child. Keep receipts for large expenditures. Social Security may require you to complete a form to account for the money. If there is any money leftover each month, it should be saved for the child's future needs.
