Can I get a root canal while pregnant?

Saturday, February 5, 2011

I think I need a root canal even though the dentist said he couldn't see anything on the x-ray. The thing is, I feel pressure and the other day pain. But I am afraid of dental procedures since I had one recently which was botched. I want to get pregnant by next year. Should I consider having my root canal before then? I was wondering if being pregnant could cause general inflammation in my body and how that wouldn't be good to have it fixed while pregnant. Basically, can I keep putting it off. I'd like to put it off until it gets infected, then mentally I won't care what happens. Thanks.

There is absolutely no danger in having dental work done including root canals before or after pregnancy. I work for an endodontist and we do root canals on pregnant woman all the time. The only thing he advises is to not have any xrays taken within the first three months of pregnancy. After that its perfectly safe. We usually double shield as an extra precaution. For the most part root canals are no different then a simple filling and more then 95% of people never have a problem afterward.
