Hi, I had a single tooth implant placed a few years ago and have taken a great care at home. I have 2 questions: (1) Who should I see for my dental imaplnt maintenance? Prosthodontist who placed my implant or perodontist or any general dentist would do? The reason why I'm asking is because I moved ever since dental implant and now I live more than 40 miles away from my prosthodontist's office. I'm wondering whether or not I should travel far to see him because he is the one that placed my implant, or any prosthodontist or perodontist nearby would do a just as good job. FYI, I recently visited my general dentist - she took films of my teeth including implant and said all my teeth and gums look fine. (2) What can I expect from an implant maintenance visit? I guess another reason why I'm sort of dragging to see my prosthodontist is because I'm afraid he would have to take out my implant to see whether prosthesis is still firmly placed etc and God knows how painful that'd be..... :( Thanks in advance!

I would feel confident in having my implant checked on a yearly basis by a general dentist. With a visual exam and an x-ray of the implant, he would be able to tell if there was a problem (which there rarely is). If you would feel more comfortable, you can have a specialist look at it every several years but he would not take anything off or apart while checking it. Good luck with the implant.
