i live in southern California and i work at a dead end job. i only stay at my job due to the fact that it has benefits like life insurance and medical/ dental care. im trying to find a better job with benefits but i was told that you have to wait 3 months in order to receive benefits. i am scared of the fact that if i quit my dead end job with benefits, and work at another job, not knowing how well it could go, and not promising benefits, then i will not have a job. is this true?? would should i do in this situation?

First, if you want to find a new job, you need to update your resume and hit the pavement. You do not put in your customary two week notice to your current employer until you have obtained new employment. Since, you did not list why you feel your current job is a dead end job, I can not comment on that aspect of your question. With respect to the amount of time you need to wait to be eligible for benefits that a prospective employer is offering, usually it is customary that you need to be employed for 30 days. I am unsure as to where you obtained the information regarding 3 months. So my best advice would be to update your resume and start looking for a new employer if you feel you are trapped in a dead end job. When you are on your interviews customary questions that you should ask are what benefits are offered and what is the waiting period. You should make sure you ask these questions during your interview, this should make you more at ease before accepting a job offer. Best wishes.
