My father needs dental implants but insurance doesn't cover it. What to do?

Friday, February 4, 2011

My father is 57 and needs dental implants, but his dental insurance company doesn't cover implants. And there is no way to pay out of pocket, several thousands of dollars for implants. it is a serious problem because he has difficulty chewing food. I agree he may not have been careful in caring for teeth when he was teenager and young during the 60's and early 70's. But for the last 20 to 25 years he has been taking good care of teeth. Why must a person be punished for his past actions, instead of being provided help? What is the point of health insurance if they will refuse to cover necessary health expenses? Teeth are important to a person's well being. Most of the CEO's of such insurance companies make several millions of dollars themselves, but refuse to pay few thousand dollars for patient who needs serious help. When will there be a change in health care?

Most insurance companies do not cover dental implants. However, most insurance companies will help you pay for crowns and bridges or dentures. If your father does not have any dental insurance, a social worker could be of help. He/she will be able to connect him with various community supports and resources. For example, a free dental clinic. The social worker will also be aware of government policies and programs that may be of use to your father.
