Dental work for senior citizens on SSI?

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

I am in really unfamiliar territory here. I have a mentally disabled mother-in-law living in an adult care facility who is badly in need of dental work, and we just found out Medicare doesn't cover dental. Soooo... now what?! How do seniors pay for needed dental work? (This is in New York state, btw). Has anyone had this experience? My husband and I are at a loss about who to ask. Any advice would be appreciated.

Some adult care facilities have mobile dentists who treat residents weekly or every other week... see if there's one that goes to the facility where your MIL is... Also, if there's a United Cerebral Palsy Association in your area, most of them have dental clinics with excellent dentists/staff.... your MIL would be in good hands. Most take Medicaid (if applicable) and/or reduced fees are offered. Thirdly, you can get a referral to a dentist who treats 'special needs' patients from the facility/ another residents' family members.....and they may even offer a senior citizen discount with payment plans! We do. Good luck! :)
