Is there a major cost in going to a hospital for dental care?

Sunday, October 31, 2010

I've been going to the dentist for awhile now and I'm being told that the work I have to get done is going to cost me. I just wanted to know the differences in cost when going to a hospital dentist then a private practice?
--------------------
Most hospitals only do emergency dental work and then refer you out to your local dentist or community dental office. You can't get fillings at most hospitals, at least not to my knowledge. Extensive dental work can be done in a regular office and often under sedation/ IV. Unless you need reconstruction like of your jaw or something, I wouldn't see why being seen at a hospital would be necessary.

What is the difference between a partial and a bridge for dental care?

how do you know if you need a partial or a bridge.. thanks for your help and what is the difference...
--------------------
If you have lost a tooth, it generally needs to be replaced. A partial is removable and does not require removal of tooth structure. A bridge is fixed and does require that the adjacent teeth be ground down in order to fit the bridge in place. You may want to consider an implant though. they are better all around because they are for life, and no other teeth need to be touched. You always want to save your natural tooth structure. go to http://www.ada.org/ this site will help you, it is the site for The American Dental Association

is it possible to straighten your teeth at home without dental care?

Only teeth in my mouth that are not straight are the first two fronts. How can i fix that if i can't afford going to the dentist?
--------------------
Well... for one... If it's just your front teeth that are not straight then it won't cost a lot of money. But they might put braces or Invisilign on your teeth. Your teeth may be straight, but maybe they're not even with your bottom teeth. Like your top teeth go over your bottom teeth. Or the other way around. It is not possible to straighten your teeth without dental care.

where can i get free or cheap dental care in New Jersey?

I already checked with my school...they do not cover dental with student health plan. I am in the northern new jersey/nyc area.
--------------------
Good luck! I live in Ohio and I don't think cheap dental care exists, the costs are out of this world! I need major work done, but it's like taking out a second loan! Here in Ohio, in Columbus OSU dental college. It's student but performing procedures with real dental surgeons by theyr'e side. Cheapest place around but it's first come, first serve, have to be there very early and for me it's to much of a drive. Maybe you could look into some kind of state dental college denistry like they have here though. Much cheaper. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

What is the role of good dental care during pregnancy?

Is it because the baby also uses up the mother's calcium?
--------------------
Good dental care is something to have regardless if you are pregnant or not, but especially during pregnancy because yes, the baby takes away from the calcium the mother is used to getting as well as other nutrients and bad dental care during life and pregnancy could cause weak teeth and chips as well as sensitive gums which could cause bleeding even at the slightest brush. Good dental care also reduces morning sickness, or so I've known.

how can i apply for a dental care credit card?

i need a lot of dental work to be done, including dentures. i am on ssd & my credit is not so great. i have two low limit credit cards that are always pretty much at there limit. my smile means a great deal. any help i can get would be great.
--------------------
Tell your dentist office you are looking for financial assistance/credit. They will give you the paperwork right there at the office, and in most offices you can apply right there and they will help you. This is the better choice for two reasons, if you like this dentist they will only give you the paperwork or help you apply for credit services that they accept, and also because they can give you an estimate of how much your dental work will cost and you can put that in for amount of credit that you are requesting. Good luck.

You really should go with a discount dental plan. I have a AMeriplan and the saving are great. It's not insurance so there are no restrictions or limitations. The phone # is 1-800-784-1719 website http://everyonebenefits.com/tlawrence... The cost is only $19.95 per month for a family plan.

Where am I more likely to get professional, quality care-at a dental school or a local government clinic?

I have no dental insurance, I don't qualify for medicaid, I have limited funds, I live in N.Y. and I need extensive dental work. Where do I have a better chance of getting quality, professional care? A dental school or a neighborhood clinic? Are there any other alternatives?
--------------------
in your case, I'd say a dental school, depends on who does it and if they mess up, you have some recourse . might be less at a dental school for sure. they might do it for nothing if it's a great teaching case. talk to both, see what ea would do, choose your option or ask questions if one said something different, etc...

Is there a free service on the net, that anyone can recommend me, that offer free full dental care services?

I have a lot of cavities, gingivitis and other teeth deceases that need urgent care from a professional dentist. I'm unemployed and don not have a couple of thousands of dollars to spare to the dentist. Help!!, any suggestions on where I can find all that on the internet?
--------------------
You should apply for medical assistance at your county's human services department. With MA your medical and dental will be free and your co-pay will be $0 to $3 a visit. You can get MA without having to get cash and food support. If you are denied MA, keep your denial letter. Most places have a sliding-fee that requires a MA denial letter before they will give you huge discounts. I'm a part-time worker that doesn't qualify for employee benefits but makes too much for MA. There are ways to make health care affordable. You'll have to fill-out a bunch of paperwork but its worth it. You should search on the internet for MA in your county and sliding-fee clinics in your area. I hope this helps?

How would you get free dental care through your state?

I am in dire need of a dentist and I really can not afford one. I live with my boyfriend and do not work. I watch our daughter and his older daughter from another relationship. I know if him and I were married it would be done and over with but that is not an option right now. Please let me know if there is anyway for this to happen.
--------------------
Here, where I am, certain health centers offer dental services. You can't be on insurance of any sort, including medicare/medicaid. But they offer the services for free. For those who are on Medicare/Medicaid, there are dental offices that accept that type of insurance. There are also community services offered. I recently learned that there is a church in my area that offers free services such as dental, a pharmacy, eye exams, etc all in the church there. It's something they offer once a month, I think, and they only accept 20 people each time. Not all of these services may be available in your area, but services like that aren't advertised much, you have to do your research. Good luck!

What happens to people who can not afford dental care who have bad teeth?

I don't know if diabetes makes things worst on a persons teeth it seems to destroy everyting else. I just happened to look at my teeth in a really good mirror & it looks like the tooth next to my front teeth has a cavity....I don't want to be toothless. Do I have any alternatives or hope that something I can afford will be made available in the future?
--------------------
One of the programs the previous person is referring to is care credit (http://www.carecredit.com). Most dental offices accept this. The other thing you may want to check is if there are any dental schools or public health clinics in your area. They will both see patients for a fraction of what a private dentist charges. The worst thing you can do is neglect any dental issues because they will not go away, but will only get worse. For example, if you have a cavity now, it probably just requires a filling, which may be like ~$100-$200. If you wait and the decay progresses, you may end up needing a root canal and or a crown (both of which may be in the $1000 range EACH), or if you ever lost the tooth, you'd need either an implant or bridge, both of which are in the thousands. If you look at it that way, $100-$200 doesn't seem like that much anymore, does it? We see this everyday. If people got their problems fixed early, they'd save thousands of dollars.

In PA if you decline Dental care employer offered benefit must you sign a declination form?

If you choose not to take dental coverage offered by your employer must you sign a form declining and does the employer have to have everyone enrolled or not sign one acknowledging it was offered.
--------------------
I think that's true in most (if not all) states now, for all forms of insurance. That just proves that they offered you the insurance, so you can't later claim discrimination. It's not something to worry about. Just sign it if you don't want the insurance.

This varies by company. At my company (based in NY), you either get the insurance, or you sign a declination paper and are ineligible to sign up for it again until the next year during a period of time called "Open Enrollment". This is a fairly common practice.

Two years in a row I had dental work done at the dental clinic in Guardalavaca. It isn't free but certainly inexpensive by Canadian standards. In December I had 2 fillings and a crown done, the price 65 CUC under $85.00 Canadian. In Canada it would have been at least $400-500.00 Dr. Miguel the dentist didn't freeze anything so it hurt a bit but the quality was very good. He had also done a filling for me the previous December but that time he froze everything so possibly he was out of novocaine this time. He spoke excellent English. All you have to do is ask client services at your resort to make an appointment. Edit: Thank you college girl, you probably know Dr. Miguel and that clinic.

--------------------
I don't know about the wisdom tooth, but grinding your teeth at night can cause a lot of pain during the day. Many people who grind their teeth have TMJ. You should try wearing a night guard while you sleep to prevent yourself from clenching/grinding. You can usually buy them for $20/$25 at drugstores or have your dentist make one for you (that is usually more expensive though).

what do you do to stop foul breath, halitosis? could you use the baking soda also to stop the smell in your mouth?
--------------------
Use a good tongue scraper, floss your teeth regularly, brush your teeth after each meal. Use a good mouthwash - I recommend Biotene - it's a little expensive but no alcohol, and it has natural enzymes. Keep those new little sheets handy that are made by listerine.

How do you esae toothache till the dental clinic opens
--------------------
Regular Ibprofen works great, believe it or not, and it is what I live by, for my current state of unresolved cavities and incoming wisdom teeth. But if you are looking for something else, chloroseptics work temporarily, or maximum strength (not baby) orajel works wonders, too. But be ware that that actually numbs your mouth, so if you still need to talk, I wouldn't suggest it. Ibprofen would be what I would suggest first. Or ask a local pharmacist.

What is the best toothbrush or dental care system to use with braces?

My 9 y/o daughter got braces and I want to make sure that her teeth are getting cleaned properly. Any suggestions? Thanks.
--------------------
Sonicare is especially recommended for someone with braces. Sonicare Elite is my top choice. There are many different model designations, but the "motors" are all pretty much the same. The kits are different because they pack different accessories. Some have two brush heads and some have four. Some have a travel bag and some have a wall-mount charger instead of a counter top charger. Just read the label carefully and buy what you need. Bear in mind that you will have to replace the brush heads about every six months, so see if it is cheaper to buy a few extra brush heads in one of the kits. Otherwise, buy a Sonicare, read and follow the directions. The directions are very clear and easy to understand. If you want to try a Sonicare without taking out a loan, I've got good news for you. I just bought one for THIRTY DOLLARS. It uses two "AA" batteries, so you are not paying for a charger, etc. I have no idea how long the batteries last (yet), but $70 would buy a boat load of batteries. It seems to be equally effective as the rechargeable version with the new batteries.

find a local university or community college that has a dental program. they offer cleanings and some minor repairs. problem is it will take longer, and they are still learning so screw-ups are possible. I would also suggest calling all dentists in your area. some of them will allow you to make monthly payments. I had to get 2 pulled a while back- no insurance, i make too much money for gov't assistance, but a $300 dental bill would have killed me and my kids. I found a really great dentist who let me pay him $10/month. It was really quite amazing. I also remember, from back when i was little that my church had a free dental day, where a couple of the dentists who attended would get together to help members in need. You may try that route as well. good luck to you.

With the loss of my job came loss of my dental insurance. After a serious financial set back a couple of years ago I'm not able to pay much. Where do I go for help?
--------------------
I don't know if your financial setback affected your credit, but if not, apply for CareCredit at carecredit.com. It's a credit card that can only be used at medical, dental, and vet offices. They offer 6-12 months no interest, depending on the amount you will be spending. Many big cities also have free clinics. I'd google it and try to find one close to you.

You need to register with an NHS Dentist first, and some of them only take on private patients, so try and look around your local dentists' to see if any of them are taking on NHS patients. Yes, you will need some form of identification because they will need your address, full name, DOB, and so on. Also, because you're under 18, if however, you are under 16, your Mum will need to go and register for you and go with you to your dentist appointments until you are 16.

You can sign up for a dental discount program where you receive........well.......discounts in dental care. 50% fillings, cleanings for $50 etc. Ameriplan is one of them........u pay $12/mo and then can use any doctor on thier list to get teh discounts. I got my braces through them for $2000. Around here, that's almost %50 off. This might not help immediately in your more emergent need, but I'd look into it if I were you as these days dental care is SO not cheap or included in basic health care packages. :( good luck with this!

Go to the nurse or guidance counselor at school... your 'complaint' will be on your record, and will be followed up by your area's CPS (Child Protective Services) if not resolved in a timely manner. Since you're a minor, you won't be able to get in to see someone on your own~ you need help with that. I'm not familiar with Florida Kid Care, but I'm sure you'll need a consenting adult to get you in... No one should suffer like this..... Good luck to you!

How should I approach a dentist to barter my marketing skills in exchange for dental care?

I don't have dental coverage, my business is marketing and my smile is a mess.
--------------------
In order to barter the value of your services should be equal or close to the dentist. So first look for a dentist offering free exams and x-rays, cleanings for new patients this is approx value of $200 savings and a great way for you to introduce yourself and become familiar with your new dentist and customer. Now back to the marketing part obvisously if you have the coupon for free services he is marketing but your referrals may still matter for discount for each referral and if your create an affordable avenue to mail out or distribute the coupons, cards etc. for a set discount amount. In addition you let him know you are paying privately (cash) and plan your treatment according to your budget and your marketing services discount. For more savings on your bill you can obtain low cost dental care by enrolling in a discount dental plan for about $100.00 for the entire year! Discount dental plans provide 10-60% off routine dental care and expensive dental procedures plus select plans offer FREE exams, x-rays etc. Now you have saved hundreds off your dental bill by combining the discount dental plan, marketing and coupon either way you will receive a treatment plan with costs and you will know how much to barter and it's worth to both of you. Look below for a few more tips on how to cut dental costs

I live in Seattle and would like to get some dental work done but it seems as if you have to have insurance or a hefty savings account to have dentists even look at you. Would love any input on how to accomplish this.

Where do you find the best low cost dental care?

I have a friend who is out of work. He needs to have extensive dental work done. Basically, he needs to have all of his teeth pulled and get dentures. In order for him to get a good job and feel better about himself, he wants to get his teeth fixed yet has little to no money. What does he do? Where does he go?
--------------------
The best thing to do would be to invest in a dental plan with no waiting periods and no maximums. That way he can get all the work done now that he has time, and get a good job later. In my experience denture4less.com is a great financial help both for extractions and dentures. He needs to find a dentist by zip code to receive the savings.

Where can I get free dental care in the Metro Detroit area?

I need extreme dental work, probably dentures, and I don't have dental insurance. My teeth hurt and I can't eat anything without alot of pain.
--------------------
Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients. Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale. Your local United Way may also be aware of such a clinic. In some areas, you can reach them now by dialing 2-1-1 for "non-emergency information." Go to a dental school, if there is one near you, for reduced costs. Check http://www.toothwoman.net to see if low-cost or free dental services are available near you. Check http://bphc.hrsa.gov and choose "Find a Health Center" to see if there is a low-cost clinic near you. Check http://www.nfdh.org/DDS.html to see if your state has a "Donated Dental Services" program. D.D.S. is designed to locate dentists who will give free care to patients who are financially compromised due to medical problems. This is a process that will take a couple of months to get your information and then arrange for someone to see you. Not all states have D.D.S. programs.

Have them chew on disclosing table and show them the dental plaque Objective 2. Educate them about eating habit (for example, avoid frequent sugar intake) Activities: . Tell them about healthy vegetable diet for adults . Tell them about the benefit of milk for their child's teeth . Tell them about how sugar can cause cavities . Tell them about bottle tooth decay Objective 3. Educate them about the smoking problems Activities: . Advise them about how smoking causes lung cancer . Advise them about how smoking causes heart attack . Advise them about how smoking causes bad breath . Advise them about how smoking cause gum disease . Advise them about the danger of second-hand smoking . Advise them about how to get Help for quitting I hope the above will help you. Have a good trip and good luck in Nicaragua.

Is there any homeopathic or other alternative dental care available?

I read a story about healers in the Philippines who tap on the root of a bad tooth before extracting it by hand without need of novocain. I am so fed up with fluoride and western dental care but can't seem to find anything else.
--------------------
Not really. Just don't use flouride in your toothpaste. Tom's of Maine, peppermint is excellent. As long as you use Brita, or some filter like it, you should be fine. Any flouride you get from bits of dental care else where won't do you any harm.

How much is dental care in the US generally?

I'm needing to get some dental work done and live in Aus, but I'm travelling back to my hometown in Michigan in a couple of months. I'm just trying to work out if it would be cheaper to do it there. Has anyone had a root canal therapy and crown done recently, or could anyone direct me to a place where I could find a general idea of prices? I know I'd have to speak to the dentist once I get there to know for sure, but it would help to have a general idea. (If it's generally about the same cost, then I'll just enjoy my holiday and get it done once I get home!) Depending on what is found in the tooth, I could be looking at a root canal and crown or an extraction and implant. Thanks!
--------------------
I'm a dentist in Texas. Root canals generally run from $700 to 1000, crowns $800-1200. Implants are about $2500-3500(not including the crown that will need to be placed on the implant)

What is the best dental care items to buy?

Right now I have a regular teeth brush and dental floss. But I am looking for an auto brush, and I think I like Dental Floss by Reach... not sure. There seems to be many different kind and varieties in brand, etc. Bit confused.
--------------------
Great question! The answer depends on the individual. Anyone can do a fine job with a manuel tooth brush. That being said, most people do a better job cleaning with an electric tooth brush. Braun Oral-B has a brush called the Vitality. There are three kinds, you will want the one that has the round head. They cost less than $20.00 If you want to spend more money, Sonicare is the best of the best. They have a few models out and they all work equally well. They will run anywhere from $95.00 to $149.00. As far as floss goes. If you have tight contacts between your teeth, you will want either a waxed floss or a synthetic floss like Glide.

Has anyone ever traveled to Cuba or Canada to get free dental care??? I was thinking of going to Cuba & getting my teeth done like Michael Moore in Sicko took the Americans over there & did is it possible to do I am a citizen? A Cuban person told me I could I just heve to get my own Novaciane they don't have alot down there Serious answers please
--------------------
I would never get dental work done in another country again. If something goes wrong then you have to either travel back there again to have the dentist fix it ( there goes the $$ you thought you could save) or you have to pay a dentist here to fix it. If you pay to have it done here in the first place, then the dentist should stand by his/her work. Not every country have the same sanitation standards/ infection control etc.

Why doesn't Canada use surplus to start a national dental care plan?

Canada had a huge surplus in money this year, why doesn't it start a new dental care plan so that everyone can have dental coverage without having to pay *** loads of money themselves or to insurance companies? It's stupid because so many sicknesses and diseases are linked to dental hygiene and maintenance, why wouldn't they implement dental care as a preventative sickness measure to help us Canadians maintain good health? This outrages me so much.

The Popular Pumpkin Post

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

It seems like every blogger is posting something about pumpkins - from the canned pumpkin shortage (is that happening again?) to carving and painting to preserving and baking. For once, I'm following along because this was the first year I actually cleaned and cooked my own pumpkin. For the few years that I've been baking, I've bought canned pumpkin because I assumed it would be too much work to get my own pumpkin pulp. While it's still definitely quicker just to grab a can, roasting and preserving pumpkin is really not difficult.

Here's some of my proof:
Here's a good set of pictures and steps for roasting and preserving a pumpkin. I tried making pumpkin spice cookies, but they flopped. The rest is going in the freezer for Thanksgiving dessert.

I also roasted the seeds! Who knew that would be so easy too?
Here's a great set of instructions for roasting pumpkin seeds. I baked them for about 45 minutes, shaking the pan every 10 minutes to prevent burning. After that, I shut the oven off and let the seeds finish drying in the residual heat.

And on to another topic, I gathered the first bag of pecans for this season. Thanks to my neighbor, this is no longer back-breaking work. He saw me bending over to pick up the nuts and let me borrow this handy tool.

You just gently push on a pecan on the ground, and it goes through the wires into the little cage. Wonderful invention. Do they even make these anymore?

And to round out this food post, I'm sharing Nikki's Blueberry Mud Muffins.

So they're not really made of mud, but we started calling them that because of the brownish color. Nikki substituted the sugar and butter with Smucker's blackberry fruit spread, and it was delicious! The fruit spread just made it a funky brown color with a purplish tint. I don't know the entire recipe - just that she was experimenting with a gluten- and dairy-free version. But the fruit spread was in proportion to the amount of sugar and butter that the recipe called for. They were good enough that I'm asking her to make them again...

Where can you get dental care on a sliding scale in Los Angeles?

There must be clinics in Los Angeles where anyone without insurance can get quality dental care and pay a sliding scale
--------------------
I dont know LA that well, but I know Orange County pretty well. Ther is an organization called We Care. Also, ucla has a fantastic dental program, and they have a clinic. Western Dental Centers offer affordable dental care, although it isn't on a sliding scale. If you need very inexpensive dental care for a child, the Boys and Girls club of Anaheim, CA has a dental clinic. I voulenteered there for years. You can call the dental society in your county or in Orange county, and they will have information on sliding scale clinics. good luck :)

why don't we politically try for socialized dental care too if we are gonna have free national health care?

some dental problems could be very life threatening like an abscess. Also dental care could be very expensive, like 3000 for a root canal.
--------------------
There are several types of subsidized dental care systems in various European countries, for example. If you are really interested, you can look up the different programs, by country, and see the type of government programs, private programs, varying insurance coverage plans and combinations thereof. We could evaluate those programs to see what aspects might work well here since many people here have no dental coverage.

Why are health care and dental care mentioned separately?

I often see health and dental care mentioned separately (e.g. the military offers health and dental care), but isn't dental care part of health care?
--------------------
well i know what you mean.. and i do have the answer for it.. but im not really good at explaining things.. so here it goes. health care is for doctors nurses etc. while dental care is specially for the teeth. regular doctors dont really study that while dentist only study teeth they dont really know anything about doing the kind of checkups that say your family doctor does. so technically speaking its like theres two schools.. either be in the "health care school" were you can become a nurse doctor surgean etc. or go to dentist school.. where you only learn about teeth... jaws etc.. haha i know this is so confusing but my mind is not exactly in thinking mode. or not very articulate. but i hope this helps give you an idea

Healthier on a Budget: Beyond the Average Grocery Store

Monday, October 25, 2010

For the entire Healthier on a Budget series, see here.

Other Stores
Lots of great deals can be found at places besides just typical grocery stores. Look at stores like Aldi’s for cheap produce or Big Lots for organic or natural packaged foods. Neither accepts coupons, but 2 to 3 times each year, Big Lots has coupons for 20% off your entire purchase.

Local Farms
Check out farmer’s markets, but go armed with a price sheet so you know when you’re getting a good deal. Try going towards the end of the day when farmers may have reduced prices so they don’t have to take as much home. Also, ask farmers if they have any less desirable produce they can offer at a discount. The scratched, bruised, or really ripe produce often has to be thrown out because customers skip over them. Sometimes, farmer’s markets outside of cities offer cheaper produce than those closer to the center of town. Those in urban areas are counting on people being willing to pay a little extra for locally grown.

Some farms also have their own small stores, and their prices are typically cheaper than what their goods sell for in other grocery stores. For example, there’s a dairy farm near my home. Whole Foods carries their milk, but it’s cheaper buying straight from the store on the farm. Some farms also offer CSAs – Community Supported Agriculture. You pay quite a bit up front, but you are supplied with fresh produce for the entire growing season. Personally, I don’t find CSAs cost-effective since you normally can’t choose what goes in each box. To find farmer’s markets or CSAs near you, check out LocalHarvest.org.

Other Local
If you have friends or neighbors who grow or raise their own food, ask if you can pick your own for a price. For an even cheaper alternative, offer to make a trade. Do you have a service or item to barter with? Babysitting for peaches, lawn mowing for apples, portrait painting for pecans, etc. If it’s a very busy family, you could offer to help preserve the bounty in exchange for some for yourself.

Camera Shy

Sunday, October 24, 2010

Nikki and I were tossing around some crazy blog topics, and we thought it would be fun(ny) for her to embarrass herself with this one:

My family and I haven't taken many pictures over the last few years, and I've started to cringe when a camera is brought out. I don't feel like I look "my best" too often, so I certainly don't want it documented.

Yesterday, I was looking through some old photos trying to find a specific one when it hit me - I  DO want these years documented on camera, no matter how rough I look. Sure, I'm not exactly fond of the pictures where I'm in old baggy clothes, no make-up, and wearing thick glasses instead of contacts. Those are not the pictures I post on Facebook or put in frames around my house. But as I looked through the old photos, I couldn't help but smile at even the grungy photos because I can remember the moment it captured. Without the visual reminder, I would've forgotten those moments.

Now I'm making a promise to myself: I will not try to avoid cameras or complain when someone is taking pictures. I don't look "my best" on a daily basis, so why should that be all that's allowed on camera. I want visual reminders of more than just the special events like Christmas. I want the normal daily events and spontaneous moments as well.

Besides, if I had always avoided cameras, I wouldn't be able to look back and laugh at days like this:

Tacky Day way back in middle school. Thick glass, braces, and yet so happy.

It's Not All About Me

Friday, October 22, 2010

Here's Nikki for you again:

I'm a people pleaser and want to say "yes" to everything that's asked of me. I really do believe it's better to give than receive and love seeing people's reactions when something good is done for them. For over a year though, I allowed it to be all about me and did nothing but receive. My health left me with no energy or desire to help others and my pride was broken as those close to me did so much for me.

Now that my health is on the upswing, I'm having to remind myself that it's not all about me anymore. You see, what I eat, how much (or little) I sleep, how I handle stress, how often I exercise, and what chemicals I'm around all greatly effect how well my health holds up. If I do something (like eat too much food I'm allergic to) or don't do something (like not going to bed early enough), my health suffers. I may be out of commission for a few hours or the whole day, but my feeling has been "this will pass" and I can deal with it until then.

One day it hit me - It's not all about me!

When I feel too miserable to get anything done or even be sociable, my relationships suffer - especially my marriage. My husband often asks if there's anything he can do for me when I feel so rough, and I say no so as not to be a burden. But I am a burden! Those are the times I'm not around to go out with him, have dinner with him, or even talk about our days.

My husband has been my greatest motivation to improve my health because it's about him as well. He unknowingly motivates me to eat better and push myself to the gym. Whatever I am or am not able to do because of poor health effects him and our marriage.

I used to love you my sweet Reese's, but not anymore. No more for me, thanks.

Your situation is probably very different from mine, but I bet the basic principle is the same. If it's not all about you, who else is it about? How or what have they motivated you to improve?

Healthier on a Budget - Go Beyond the Perimeters and Know a Good Price

For the full Healthier on a Budget series, click here.

Many "healthy eating" guides recommend shopping just the perimeter of grocery stores. All I can say is their grocery stores must not be set up like the ones I shop at.

Typically, right by the entrance is BOGO or other sale items that are heavily processed with lots of preservatives (Hamburger Helper, Poptarts, etc.). Go around the perimeter and you'll normally find fresh produce (that may or may not be in season), raw and deli meats, a bakery with plenty of processed "enriched" baked goods, and the refrigerated section with Pillsbury cookies and Reddi-Whip alongside the milk and cheese. Some of this is good. Some is really not.

Instead of shopping just the perimeter, how about shopping the whole store with a careful eye. The frozen section in particular can be a gold mine of healthier foods. Find frozen fruits and vegetables picked at peak season, seafood, and whole grain products like Food for Life and Kashi.

Down the breakfast aisle, there's whole-grain cereals (just watch the sugar content) and old fashioned rolled oats. Down other aisles, you'll find dried and canned beans, canned seafood and meats, brown rice and quinoa, canned vegetables and fruit (in 100% juice), a range of healthy spices, 100% fruit or vegetable juices, fruit spreads, and dried fruit (go for varieties with no added sugar). For a quick serving of vegetables, make a meal with tomato-based pasta sauce or salsa. There are also lots of nuts and nut butters, but check ingredient lists of flavored nuts, trail mixes, and butters. Popcorn is a whole grain, but opt for plain and flavor it yourself.

After sale prices and coupons, some great deals can be found with many of these. I've gotten Adam & Eve juice, Green Giant and Steamfresh frozen vegetables, Muir Glen tomato sauce, and Del Monte canned tomatoes all for free thanks to sales and coupons.

As long as you don't get sucked in by the unsubstantial claims (like sugary cereals that try to make up for it by saying it's "a great source of fiber"), it's safe to peruse the offerings towards the middle of the store. The key is to not buy something just because it's a good deal. Save your money for items that are healthier and ones you'll actually use.

But how do you know if it's a good price for healthier foods? I recommend keeping track of sale prices so you know what a great deal is. For a few months, I kept an Excel spreadsheet of sale prices of the foods I bought the most. It wasn't long before I saw patterns of sale cycles (when or how often specific products go on sale) and could recognize rock-bottom prices (extremely low prices and the perfect time to stock up). Keep a sheet in your coupon binder or in your wallet that lists the low prices so you can easily check it while your out shopping.

Where can i find low cost dental care?

Right now I cannot afford dental care & need it desperately. How do I find someone to help me? There's got to be somebody out there that will help people who need it badly. Any suggestions??
--------------------
Schools of dentistry at major universities usually have clinics, although the waiting lists can be terribly long as people need dental work and it is so expensive. If I were you I would go ahead and make an appointment with a dentist you have heard good things about in your area, and go for a consultation...(consultation should be free.) Explain the situation to the dentist...that you want to get your teeth fixed, low on money, want to work out a plan of action....and so on...and the dentist can give you a plan for your mouth that has prices on it. You save up the money for each part and then go have that part done. In the meanwhile, really look for some dental insurance, which is usually pretty cheap, like under 15 dollars a month, and even though there may be a waiting period before you can use it, it will help in the long run. The dentist at your consultation can give you some ideas of what plans you can look into for that. I feel for you, and good luck in this endeavor...Best of luck-- Jennifer

Funny, but here in Canada I guess it is. Dental is not part of the state run health system. Neither is optometry, come to think of it, so I guess they are both "luxuries" from a political stand point.

what does it mean when unsisome health plan says Members are eligible for free, routine dental care?

what exactly is the routine dental care thats free ? fillings , rout canals , etc ? anyone know ?

Routine would be exams, xrays and cleanings. Anything else would not be routine, but "basic" or "major".

Check with local colleges. If there is a dental program, they might be able to get him in, little to no cost. Usually long waits though, if he can wait.

Almost every community has free dental clinics or programs that dentists provide pro bono services. You might want to call your state dental society and they might be able to give you more information as to what may be available for you. Good luck.

hat is the country with the best dental care?

I want to have my extremely messed up wisdom teeth pulled, but here in the USA I am looking at paying $4,000; that is, $1,000 per tooth! I am also an up-and-coming traveler, and was wondering if I could go to another country-Thailand maybe? Or somewhere with good dental care-and get them removed for less. If anyone can tell me more about this I would greatly appreciate it.
--------------------
Dental care in the U.S. is by far from being the best in the world. The use of aniline chemicals like Lidocaine, Procaine, Carbocaine, etc. are not only dangerous, but aggressively carcinogenic and NO dentist I have ever seen or spoken too lets their patients know about this. Septocaine is not carcenogenic, but it has it's set of problems, but not nearly as severe and damaging as the others. Dentists are notorious for doing things as cheaply as they can to maximize their profits. A very good example of this is using Amalgam fillings instead of composites or bonded ceramics because those are more expensive for them and time consuming. We know Amalgam fillings not only contain mercury, but each one has infection breeding under it and eventually leads to the need for a root canal. If you don't think Amalgam fillings are bad, watch this video and you decide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ylnQ-T7o… For years, dentists have been telling us that amalgam fillings don't emit mercury because the mercury is in a form that prevents this in the mouth. THAT IS BLATANTLY NOT TRUE. We are told to not eat fish due to mercury, but the mercury in amalgam fillings is emitted for over 1-1/2 hours after just rubbing it a little. Just think how much mercury is emitted from several teeth with amalgams and if you have a gold crown, the mercury leaves the fillings 80 times faster! If you care about your health, the price should be secondary to your health issue. Please understand that there is a big disconnect between doctors and dentists. This disconnect has led to many problems of the teeth not being associated with many problems, medically, with the body. There are infections under EVERY SINGLE AMALGAM FILLING. Amalgam does not bond to a tooth, so they have to remove huge amounts of good tooth to do a "reverse wedge" to hold the amalgam to the tooth and this leaves a small interstitial space between the tooth and the amalgam. Changes in temperature cause expansion and contraction due to the mercury in the amalgam. That space is a great breeding ground for bacteria and "biofilms" that generate huge problems for the body. No longer can you simply trust what the dentist tells you and you need to learn the facts yourself so you can make an INFORMED and EDUCATED decision as to how your teeth will be worked on. Be proactive and do your homework. good luck to you

I need dental care badly, what's the cheapest way to go?

I'm missing several teeth and most remaining need to go also ( car accident 18 years ago) I would like to know if there is anywhere to go for free dental care, I am a tradesman so I would be willing to swap work for work, I'm 36 and I haven't smiled in 18 years, I would appreciate and welcome any thoughts or ideas. Thank you God bless, Ryan
--------------------
I would search the web or phone book for dental schools in your area. They usually do work for cheap or for free. Give them a call and see... If you printed up a flyer listing some examples of the type of work you'd be willing to trade for dental work and made the rounds to some dental offices in your area (don't expect them to have much time to chat), someone just might take you up on it. I had a friend who cleaned a dental office in exchange for dental care. These deals are probably more common than you might think. You have nothing to lose by asking. There are also dental discount plans sold online that really are not BS as I thought they might be. I really did save about 50% on a lot of major work I needed. I saved thousands by buying a $100.00 plan for 1 year. I highly recommend one of these plans for anybody who doesn't have dental insurance and knows they need some work done. http://www.dentalplans.com/ Good luck Ryan!... Hope it all works out for you :)

Are there any grants available to indigent people for dental care?

I live in Alabama and my husband has just been diagnosed with heart failure. He has weak and missing teeth and that makes it difficult for him to eat the vegetables and fruits that he should include in his diet. Due to his medical condition he is unable to take ibuprofen for the pain that his teeth cause. If anyone could tell us how he can get the dental care that he is in dire need of we would greatly appreciate it.Or if you can suggest a method of pain relief that would not be harmful to a man with congestive heart failure , that would be helpful. Thank You.
--------------------
Most dental schools will do some indigent care in turn for letting their students practice on these patients. However, your husband's CHF is a factor for any type of anesthesia. He should be able to take acetaminophen (tylenol) for pain relief, as that doesn't thin the blood like high levels of ibuprofen does. I would suggest that you speak with his cardiologist about appropriate pain control. And since he is indigent, he would probably qualify for the state's medicaid/medicare plan which would have somekind of coverage for treatment of his CHF. If he has periodental disease from poor oral healthcare, then that would likely be covered too.

Does anyone know how a navy dependant would enroll in a dental care program?

I really need to enroll in a dental care program, I know that most military dependants can go through something called Concordia, but I just looked at their website and it didn't seem to help. Does anyone have personal experience with this, or know how much it costs? If it helps, I am a navy wife. Thanks!
--------------------
It's through United Concordia. Call them at 1-800-332-0366 and let them know that you want to enroll. It's about $28.00 a month. they will send you a benefits booklet. It's decent insurance.

Call up a dentist and ask if he knows of a low cost or sliding scale clinic in the area. Sometimes dentists will donate work to low income people and there might be a free dental clinic that you can go to. If the first dentist doesn't know then try another one.

Does dental insurance fall under the Health Care Reform Obama is proposing?

Im trying to see that if Health care also includes dental care. I hadnt been to the dentist for years since it was too expensive. I am writing a paper and I need something that I can relate to the health care discussion.
--------------------
not to my knowledge you have a good point that dental care can be expensive and there are some links between dental health and heart disease, for example. However, I don't that will be added to the bill. Can you imagine the new wave of stupid talk and fervor that would come out if dental care was included? Ignorant people would rant and rave about poor people and immigrants getting teeth whitenings, caps, gold teeth, etc...basically every ridiculous thing you can think of.

Does the Health Reform Bill make *any* provisions for adult dental care?

I read a book about the Health Reform bills, and it talked about dental care for children. That's all good and well, but what about adult dental care, especially for the disabled and impoverished? I saw nothing about provisions for adult dental care above the barely minimal provisions already in place in Medicaid and Medicare.
--------------------
If you are talking about Obama care, there is no dental coverage for children and adults.

Dental Care?

My boyfriend needs 3 root canals because he wasn't able to go to the dentist for years. He has no insurance and doesn't have good credit, he lives in Arizona around Phoenix and is 18 years old. He doesn't make enough money to pay for the treatment, any suggestions?
--------------------
As a dentist I recommend calling your counties local Department of Family and Childrens Services. A lot of these services actually have a dentist on staff that is available to help with any dental procedures you may need. If your county DFCS office does not provide any type of dental services they should be able to put you into contact with someone who will be able to assist you (ex: another state agency). Also try your local dental school if there is one around you, these procedures are usually provided and are very low in cost compared to a dental office itself. Good luck and I hope you find the help you need.

How to get free dental care for a disabled person?

My mother is disabled and her teeth are turning black and are diseased. Where can you get dental care for the very poor adult?

My mother needs dental care due to having severe acid reflux. She had a beautiful smile. She contracted a stomach virus and vomited several times, the acid from her stomach deteriated her right front tooth. She has half or less of it left.We live in Anniston,Alabama. My mother is on SSI which doesn't pay for the dental work she needs.Like veneers or somthing along those lines. We would love to see our mother smile again.
--------------------
Since she is on SSI she should qualify for Medicare or Medical (It might be called something else if you are in another state). A last resort would be something like Western Dental- where they have payment plans, but there dentists are not the best. Has she seen her regular dentist? There is not hurt in calling and asking how much something is and if they accept payment plans.

Is Dental Coverage being considered in any of the Health Care Bill options?

I am more concerned with providing for my and my families Dental Care. Every dental plan I can find basically sucks. Everything we put in our bodies goes through our mouth so naturally your dental health is paramount to healthy living.
--------------------
IMO it should. You're right when you say that dental care is just as important as regular care. I've read that people with poor oral hygiene have a higher chance of heart disease. If we had more preventative care and people actually took care of their bodies, we would see a huge reduction in how much it would cost to treat people.

Regarding dental care: Is there a difference in quality of care received from a PPO provider than a Non-PPO?

My Delta Dental insurance provides a 60% co-pay for Non--PPO and an 80% co-pay for a PPO dental care provider. And are the allowed amounts that are set by Delta Dental different for a PPO and Non-PPO provider for the same procedure?
--------------------
PPO providers are usually paid at a lower rate than a non provider. Thus the insurance company can make more of a profit. That is why they pay less and you have more out of pocket expense if you see one. It has nothing to do with their level of expertise. My personal opinion after practicing dentistry for over 40 years, is that most non providers are better dentists and have plenty of patients and do not need to get paid at a lower rate for their services. That is why they do not sign on as providers.

What is the optimal dental care regimen?

Example: *Visit dentist twice a year. * Floss after all meals and snacks with power flosser. * No sugar in diet other than what is in fruit. * Brush after all meals and snacks with a power toothbrush such as Sonicare. * Irrigate mouth with WaterPik or similar device. * Clean tongue. Probably no one is this perfect. But what is your idea of perfect dental home care? P.S. To dentists and hygienists: Here's your chance to tell us what the perfect dental patient would do.
--------------------
that sounds like a great regimen. I would add: *when you brush with a manual toothbrush, use small circular motions at a 45 degree angle *brush after every meal/snack *floss at least 1 time/day and wrap the floss in a c-shape around the tooth and floss each side of the tooth. Also go under the gums to remove plaque hidden there. It will reduce the bacteria and the incidence of periodontal disease. *avoid sodas (acid & sugar), juice (excess sugar and staining) and sugary gums/mints etc. Ask your hygienist at your next cleaning which areas you had more plaque/tartar buildup so you can focus better on these areas. Good LucK!
