HELP!!! Post-Wisdom Teeth and Supernumery Extration. Dentist's opinion and similar experiences valued!!!?

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Hey guys. I just had 9 teeth extracted yesterday (4 wisdom teeth and 5 supernummery). 4 of my supernummery teeth were extracted in the site under my tongue and 1 was on the top of my mouth. I am really paranoid as to the proper dental care procedures i should take in order to prevent dry sockets from forming and i would really appreciate your output. When do the stitches melt? My tongue is constantly aware of the end of the stitches sticking out from my gums and i am afraid to unwittingly break the stitches which will inevitably lead to further grievences.. The wisdom tooth at the bottom right side of my face is aching slightlyand has a stain of blood at the site of the extraction. I know that it is suppose to be there as a sign of the extraction but i was wondering whether it indicates that the blood isn't clotting properly? I have refrain from brushing my teeth for fear of dislodging the blood clots and stitches and i tried garglign my mouth with salt water. However, i tried gently brushing my teeth, avoiding the points of wisdom teeth extraction but my mouth still has a foul smell that you can usually associate with that of raw fish. Is this a sign of a dry socket forming? When would it be safe for me to start brushing vigorously again? I am not feeling much pain after the surgery which was yesterday. Is it considered good fortune or am I in danger of blood sockets forming.. (Sorry, i am really anxious about those things forming which lead to me takign a ton of research) Could you guys please tell me when i would be fully healed and the any extra procedures i can conduct to further speed up the healing process? I would really appreciate helpful remarks on my predicament and i am sorry for the long passages. I just want to get this whole thing over with as school starts on monday and i can't imagine going through the first few weeks with a putrid smelling mouth or agonising pain. Thanks guys!

I just had my wisdom teeth out 8 days ago so i know exactly how you feel. I was terrified of dry socket too as well as every little thing that was going on in my mouth. however, im urging you to relax and follow your doctor's rules. Your stitches should dissolve with in 3-7 days. Mine took pretty much the full 7. Brushing your teeth is fine. I recommend using a kids toothbrush as it is smaller and softer. But be sure to avoid the extraction sites. I still am not brushing those. When you rinse with salt water make sure you are not swishing but rather rolling your head from side to side to gently let the water roll around in your mouth and then lean over the sink to let it fall out. DO NOT spit. I rly recomment using biotene mouthwash starting tomorrow or Sunday to help with the smell. I know exactly what youre talking about and my surgeon said it ws completely normal and could last for 10 days. Brush twice a day, after brushing use the mouthwash (same technique as the salt water) and then use salt water after each meal. Just rest up and take it easy. You will start feeling MUCH better in about 2 or 3 days. Remember, no smoking, drinking with a straw, sneezing, coughing, etc anything that causes suction in the mouth for about a week. Good luck. the worst is over with =}
