I have to go and get a deep scaling, or deep cleaning on my teeth on tuesday. I must admit I am kind of scared because I don't know what to expect. I have to get this procedure done because i ha vent had dental care in about three years and they found a good amount of plaque and tartar buildup on my teeth. I want to know what this experience is going to be like. I have an okay tolerance of pain but i don't want to deal with anything that is unbearable. Please help thank you Portia.

I've had this done. My dentist usually doesn't do more than a 1/4 of your mouth at a time. I didn't get Novocaine when mine was done and it was a little uncomfortable in a couple spots where there was more plaque than others since the hygienist had to keep going back over the same place. The tool used goes under the gum line with a scaling/scraping end on it and uses warm water to irrigate the pieces of tarter away once they are broken off. If your teeth are cold sensitive make sure the water is warmed up first since this is going under the gum line and around the roots. If your teeth are sensitive I'd asked for Novocaine. My husband had this done a few months after me at the same dentist and he said it was painful. I guess it all depends on how your pain tolerance is. Since I've had this done all the cleanings since have been deep cleanings. When I get those now it's the whole mouth at the same time.
