Is it safe to brush my kitten's teeth with children toothpaste?

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

I have rescued a cute 4 weeks old kitten, and I'm trying to provide him with good dental care. But, I was wondering if using children toothpaste on him would be dangerous? Also, how often should I brush his teeth? Thank you in advance for your help =)

First of all, dry food does not clean cat's teeth! http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?ac… At 4 weeks old, your kitten has baby teeth which will be replaced with adult teeth when he's older. If he eats a good diet, his teeth will be fine to adulthood. If you're planning to brush his teeth then it's a good idea to get him into the routine at a young age though. Just use a soft baby toothbrush and water for now. When the adult teeth come in, talk to your vet about regualr oral care like cleanings. Regular cleanings can really help keep his teeth in good shape throughout his life. As for using human toothpaste, don't do it. It's dangerous if swallowed and you can't control the kitten from ingesting it. They make special cat toothpaste you can buy at pet stores. Sounds like your kitty is lucky to have a caring person to look after him!
