My 9 year old cat has a loose tooth. One of the big fangs on the top.?

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

My 9 year old female cat has her right fang loose. We have always taken care of her medically and dental. No serious injuries have ever happened to her and she gets checked up once a year or every 18 months depending on finances current vaccines and all that jazz. Since it is loose and she can still eat but she doesn't like it to be touched. Is it normal for her age She is approximately 9 and a half years old. Do I wait for it to come out on its own so it is less painful for her or take her to the vet.

Me ... I'd take her to the vet. My old man, Harley, is about 12 years old. I'm aware his teeth are in poor shape and is likely the cause of his pronounced heart murmor. I've had him on a "dental" diet for the last year. He's shown no signs of loose teeth nor wanting to be touched. He's just his regular snuggly self. I suspect your cat could be susceptible to an infection of some sort. Best get it checked out. When an animal's teeth begin to go bad (for varying reasons -- be it diet or genetic), their immune system becomes at risk. The vet I spoke with explained it in much greater detail than what I can convey to you, but in short what happens is an infection from the teeth or gums from a cat gets in the bloodstream which can affect just about anything and everything. It's the same with us humans. As in my cat's case, his heart. I wish you the best. Hope you keep us posted.
